IMAGE COMPRESSOR

Compress an image and check the actual file size

Try a smaller image download while keeping the original dimensions. Start with WebP at quality 80, compare the exported size with your source, and inspect the picture before saving. Your selected image stays on your device.

Choose an image to get started

JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF · up to 25 MiB, 16 megapixels and 8192 pixels per edge.

Your file stays on your device. Exports are still images; animation and original metadata are not preserved.

How to compare an image compression result

Choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image up to 25 MiB, 16 megapixels and an 8192-pixel edge. Start with the default WebP export at quality 80, or choose JPEG. Generate a result to see the real output size and the change from your original. Adjust quality and generate again if your destination needs a different balance.

  • Check small text, gradients, hair and edges in the output preview.
  • Compare the actual byte count with your destination’s file-size budget.
  • Download a result only after checking both appearance and size.

Choose WebP, JPEG or PNG for the image you have

WebP is a useful starting point for photographic web images and can retain transparency. JPEG is widely accepted for photographs, with transparent pixels filled by the selected background color. PNG uses lossless pixel encoding and does not use the quality setting. A PNG is often useful for a sharp graphic, but it can be much larger than a lossy photographic export.

Use measured savings instead of a guaranteed percentage

An already optimized source may become larger after re-encoding, especially when converting AVIF or a small JPEG to PNG. The workspace reports the actual change, including when the result is larger. Quality 80 is a starting setting, not a promised percentage reduction or a target file size. Keep the original if the new file does not improve your size and quality tradeoff.

Reduce pixel dimensions when quality adjustments are not enough

Compression here keeps the source width and height. A 4000 × 3000 image still contains 12 megapixels even if its file becomes smaller. If it will be displayed at 1200 × 900, use the image resizer first and compress that working copy. Every image utility export creates a still file, removes original EXIF metadata and may change the color profile. Animated inputs may produce only a first-frame image.

GOOD TO KNOW

image compressor questions and answers

Can I compress an image to exactly 100 KB?

This tool does not automatically target an exact file size. Generate a result, check its actual bytes, then lower JPEG or WebP quality if needed. Reducing dimensions in the image resizer may help when the image is larger than its intended display size.

Why is my compressed image larger than the original?

The original may already use efficient compression. Changing its format or encoding settings can add bytes. PNG is especially likely to be larger for a photograph. The workspace shows a larger-file message so you can compare another setting or keep the original.

Is PNG compression lossless?

PNG uses lossless encoding for the pixels passed to the encoder, but this is a new browser-rendered file. Original EXIF metadata is removed, color handling may change, and animation is not retained. The quality slider does not affect PNG output.

Will compressing an image change its dimensions?

No. This compressor keeps the source width and height. Use the image resizer to change pixel dimensions, then compare compression if you also need a smaller download.
